Measles outbreak in Texas approaches 500 cases as virus spreads among children in day care centers

Six young children at a day care center in Lubbock, Texas have tested positive for measles, adding to the already out-of-control outbreak that has spread to multiple states. The total number of confirmed cases in Texas has risen to 481, with 56 hospitalizations. The outbreak at Tiny Tots U Learning Academy began when a sick girl tested positive, with other affected children aged between 5 months and 3 years old. None of the children were fully vaccinated against measles. The center is working with health officials to manage the situation, but faces challenges due to the lack of clear guidance from the CDC for large day care facilities.

The U.S. is experiencing the largest measles outbreak in six years, but the CDC has provided limited information on the issue. The agency sent vaccines to Texas but has not held a news briefing on measles since 2019. Funding cuts have led to canceled vaccine clinics in some areas, potentially hindering efforts to contain the outbreak. Other states with outbreaks include Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Ohio. Lubbock’s public health director expects more outbreaks in child care centers.

The day care center is taking preventative measures by closely monitoring children for symptoms, isolating affected classrooms, and encouraging families to get vaccinated. Unvaccinated children have been asked to stay home. The MMR vaccine is the best protection against measles, with two doses usually providing lifelong immunity. Child care owners are urged to take necessary precautions as the outbreak is expected to continue spreading.
