The Education Department argued that the funded programs promoted unlawful discrimination based on protected characteristics.
A lawsuit was filed by eight states on behalf of entities that receive the grants, claiming that rescinding the awards violated federal law. The district court judge issued a temporary restraining order, which the Supreme Court ultimately overturned.
The decision, made by five conservative justices, stated that the district court judge did not have the authority to order the funds be paid. The dissenting liberal justices argued that the grant recipients would suffer irreparable harm as a result of the funds being withheld. The case only applies to grants issued to entities in states that sued, and the Department of Education ultimately canceled about $600 million in grants for teacher training.
