A group of Red Crescent paramedics were detained and mistreated by Israeli soldiers during recent conflict in the region. One of the paramedics, Asaad al-Nasasra, told his colleague, Mr. Abed, that some of their colleagues were wounded and two were killed. The soldiers taunted and mocked the paramedics, with one claiming that all their colleagues were gone. Eventually, Mr. al-Nasasra was taken away and is still missing.
Dr. al-Bardawil and Mr. Abed were asked to help soldiers evacuate civilians from the area before they were released. Mr. Abed, who had been missing all day, reassured his parents that he was safe after being released, although he had suffered repeated beatings and had to be taken home in a Red Crescent vehicle.
The paramedics’ families had been worried about their safety, with Mr. Abed’s mother sending him desperate messages until he was able to contact his father and let him know he was safe. This incident highlights the dangers faced by medical workers in conflict zones, and the need for protection of those who are providing life-saving care in dangerous situations.
