The Indiana Youth Institute recently released its 2025 Kids Count Data Book, highlighting key trends affecting children in the state. The report, presented at the Statehouse in mid-February, covers various aspects of child well-being, including health, education, economic stability, and family support. Indiana was ranked 27th in the nation for overall child well-being, according to the data.
One positive finding in Marion County was the increase in access to exercise opportunities, with a rate of 91% compared to the statewide average of 76%. Additionally, substance abuse among students in grades 7-12 has decreased significantly in the past two years.
On the other hand, mental health remains a major concern for Marion County’s youth, especially during the pandemic. More than 30% of kids reported feelings of depression, indicating a need for more support and resources in this area.
Ashley Haynes, VP of data and communications at the Indiana Youth Institute, emphasized the importance of taking action based on the data presented in the report. The institute plans to share this information with community leaders and advocates across different regions in Indiana to spark discussions and drive positive change for children in the state.
