Reach Out and Read Indiana has received a $60,000 grant from the McKenzie Scott Foundation, allowing the organization to expand its reach and provide books and literacy support to more children in the state. Currently reaching one in four children in Indiana, the program aims to double its impact and help children develop strong reading skills before entering elementary school.
Dr. Evan Kreutzer, involved with the program, highlighted the importance of early childhood literacy as one in five third graders in Indiana needs support to reach grade-level reading skills. The program operates by providing books to children during pediatric visits, teaching families how to build literacy skills at home, and promoting healthy relationships and perseverance in children.
Despite challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Reach Out and Read Indiana continues to address literacy issues by focusing on early childhood education and family well-being. With the new funding, the organization is poised to reach even more children in the state and further its mission to improve literacy rates and family relationships.
