Researchers alter genetics of wolves to have white fur resembling that of extinct dire wolves

Three genetically engineered wolf pups resembling extinct dire wolves are currently being cared for in a secure location in the U.S. These pups, created by Colossal Biosciences, have long white hair, muscular jaws, and are expected to weigh around 140 pounds at maturity. The researchers used ancient DNA from fossils to learn about specific traits of dire wolves and genetically modify cells from living gray wolves to create the pups.

However, independent scientists caution that simply creating animals that physically resemble extinct species does not fully revive those species. The genetically engineered pups will not have the opportunity to learn survival skills from wild dire wolf parents. Colossal Biosciences has also cloned four red wolves, using blood drawn from wild wolves to introduce genetic diversity to the captive red wolf population.

While this technology may have broader applications for conservation efforts, such as cloning endangered species, it does require some invasive procedures, such as sedating wild animals for blood draws. Despite the potential benefits, there are limitations to restoring extinct species, as they may not be able to fulfill the same ecological functions in today’s landscapes.

The project has received praise from U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who called it a “thrilling new era of scientific wonder.” However, experts like Vincent Lynch emphasize that while the efforts to bring back extinct species are impressive, there are still significant challenges and limitations to consider in the conservation of biodiversity.
