Man from Connecticut admits to causing fatal crash that resulted in the death of a police officer

Richard Barrington, a 20-year-old Connecticut man, has pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter, first-degree assault, and interfering with a police officer in connection with a car crash that killed a Hartford police officer and injured his partner. The crash occurred on September 6, 2023, when Barrington fled a traffic stop, ran two red lights, and crashed into the passenger side of a police cruiser responding to an emergency call. Officer Robert “Bobby” Garten, 34, died from his injuries, while his partner, Officer Brian Kearney, was seriously injured but later released from the hospital. Barrington, who was 18 at the time of the crash, will be sentenced on June 20. Initially charged with motor vehicle-related crimes, Barrington’s charges were later upgraded to include first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, and driving under the influence. A memorial service for Officer Garten drew police officers from across the region. Barrington’s lawyer, Cameron Atkinson, stated that they would reserve further comments for the sentencing hearing.
