The National Institute for Fitness and Sport in Indianapolis hosted its third annual “Pump It For Parkinson’s” fundraiser in support of Parkinson’s Awareness Month. The event will feature a “Step-a-thon” with the goal of collectively completing 25 million steps using NuStep exercise machines. This year, organizers have added a new “Hoop it for Parkinson’s” event, inspired by a local man diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 50. NIFS manages gyms and fitness centers across 14 states and created the “Bold Moves” exercise program for Parkinson’s patients. The fundraiser aims to highlight the importance of exercise in managing Parkinson’s symptoms. Last year, participants reached over 18 million steps, and President Emily Davenport emphasizes that every stride contributes to the cause. While all slots for the NuStep machines are filled, individuals can still participate by walking, running on the treadmill, or joining in on a basketball game. The “Hoop it for Parkinson’s” event kicks off at 1 p.m. This initiative aims to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s research and support for those living with the disease.
