Federal judge denies request to halt immigration enforcement activities in places of worship

A federal judge in Washington rejected a request to block immigration agents from enforcing immigration policies at houses of worship in a lawsuit filed by Christian and Jewish groups. Judge Dabney Friedrich found that there were only a few enforcement actions and no credible threat to justify an injunction. The groups claimed that the new policy allowing enforcement operations at houses of worship departs from a 30-year-old policy against such actions. This change was implemented by the Trump administration on Trump’s first day back in office. The judge also noted that there was no evidence of places of worship being specifically targeted. In a similar case in Maryland, a judge ruled against the administration, but that decision only applied to those plaintiffs. In Colorado, a judge sided with the administration in a lawsuit over a similar policy that limited immigration arrests at schools. The ruling in this case highlights the ongoing legal battles over immigration policies and enforcement actions under the Trump administration.
