The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has reported a significant increase in accidental self-inflicted shootings, with a 113% rise compared to last year. Deputy Chief Kendale Adams emphasized the importance of parents locking up their guns, especially with 24% of incidents involving children under 18. The number of injuries to kids due to accidental shootings has also increased by 167% since 2024.
IMPD is urging parents to take responsibility and prevent these incidents from happening, as they can be held accountable if their children access a gun and cause harm. To help with gun safety, free gun locks are being made available at branches of the Indianapolis Public Library.
Adams stressed the importance of prevention in the community and encouraged parents to take action to protect their children. While holding parents accountable is challenging, IMPD is determined to find ways to address the issue. The free gun locks are available at public libraries while supplies last.
