Sheriff Sentenced to Jail for Contempt of Court After Allegations of Stealing Millions

Former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel was sentenced to 60 days in jail for contempt of court after violating bail restrictions. Charged with 25 felony counts including theft and official misconduct, he had been under investigation by Indiana State Police and has been accused of using public funds to buy luxury cars and an airplane. Judge Larry Medlock had warned him to surrender all weapons, but semi-automatic handguns were found during a recent search of his home, leading to the contempt charge.

Noel gained notoriety for appearing on the reality show “60 Days In,” and as he was taken into custody, there was applause in the courtroom. His defense attorney argued that Noel had made a mistake regarding the presence of guns in his home. The investigation into Noel is ongoing, with allegations of stealing as much as $5 million.

The charges against Noel also involve his wife and daughter, who are accused of using fire agency credit cards for personal expenses. The family members have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Investigators are also looking into Noel’s spending habits, including over $50,000 at a local cigar shop using a fire department credit card.

Noel, who was also involved in local Republican politics and a nonprofit firefighting and rescue agency, must repay over $900,000 he improperly took from the jail’s commissary fund. The case has shocked the community, as a once-respected law enforcement officer faces serious criminal charges and consequences.
