A convicted murderer named Cesar Hernandez, who escaped custody from correction officers in California in December, is now accused of killing a Mexican police commander. Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for murder, escaped on December 2 and is considered armed and dangerous with violent tendencies. He allegedly killed Mexico Police Commander Abigail Esparza Reyes as law enforcement tried to apprehend him. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed the incident and stated that they were in the area but were not involved in the shooting. U.S. authorities tried to render aid to Reyes before she passed away from her injuries. A reward of $35,000 is being offered for information leading to Hernandez’s arrest.
Prior to his escape, Hernandez was serving a sentence of 80 years to life for first-degree murder in a 2019 killing in Los Angeles County. Video footage of his escape shows him running across an empty field without restraints. It is believed that Hernandez used a self-made key to break free from his chains and escape from custody. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) confirmed an active investigation related to Hernandez in Tijuana but did not provide further details. Officials are continuing to search for Hernandez and are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
