Concerns Arise Over SK Hynix’s $3.8 Billion Chip Facility Plans in West Lafayette – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

South Korean company SK hynix is planning to build a $3.8 billion advanced chip-packaging facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, that will create 1,000 jobs ranging from engineers to technicians. The project has faced opposition from residents concerned about health and environmental risks if residential land is rezoned for industrial use. The company originally intended to build on Site A, but is now considering Site B for better road access and minimal traffic. Despite community concerns, company representatives have reassured residents about water filtration and wildlife preservation near their South Korean plants. The rezoning petition for the project was recommended for denial by the Area Plan Commission and will be voted on by the West Lafayette City Council on May 5. NK Kim, a senior vice president, emphasized that they will listen to community feedback before finalizing the site selection. If approved, construction will begin quickly with mass production slated to start by the second half of 2028. The facility will manufacture chips used in phones, tablets, and computers, providing a boost to the local economy with skilled job opportunities.
