Obama portrait replaced with Trump painting after assassination attempt at White House

The White House recently moved former President Barack Obama’s official portrait to a new location in the East Room, replacing it with a painting of President Donald Trump with his fist raised in the air. The new painting is based on a photo of Trump after an assassination attempt during his campaign, with blood and Secret Service agents surrounding him. Trump’s message of “fight, fight, fight” became a key theme of his bid for a second term.

The tradition of having the most recent presidential portrait in this spot was broken by Trump, who also moved portraits of former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush during his first term. Joe Biden, who left office in January, does not have an official portrait yet. The White House Historical Association typically helps acquire portraits of presidents and first ladies.

The replacement of Obama’s portrait was accompanied by other changes in portrait placements in the White House. Some Republicans, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, enthusiastically praised the new decor. This move comes after Trump demanded a painting of him at the Colorado State House be removed and a portrait of Mark Milley disappeared from the Pentagon in January.

Overall, the switch in portraits at the White House reflects ongoing changes in the presentation of artwork and historical representations in the official residence.
