Indiana Democrats claim Republicans fail to achieve property tax reform – Headlines from Indianapolis, Indiana regarding Weather, and Traffic

The Indiana Democratic Party has criticized Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith’s call for a veto on a controversial property tax overhaul, stating that Republicans cannot deliver on their promises. The measure would provide homeowners with a credit of up to 10% of their property tax bill, with a maximum of $300. Older Hoosiers and disabled veterans could claim additional credits. Critics believe the bill falls short of providing the tax relief promised by Gov. Mike Braun. Beckwith publicly called for a veto, stating that the bill is too complex and needs to be better understood by the average Hoosier. Former Fort Wayne Mayor Paul Helmke warned that the bill could lead to an income tax hike in the next few years. Despite opposition, Braun endorsed the bill and plans to sign it into law if it passes the Indiana Senate. The Indiana Democratic Party argues that the bill will ultimately increase the tax burden on working Hoosiers and lead to higher local income taxes. The Senate is expected to send SB1 to the governor’s desk for approval.
