Pope Francis kicks off Holy Week with in-person greeting in St. Peter’s Square after recovering

Pope Francis made a reassuring public appearance on Palm Sunday after battling double pneumonia and recovering from a severe respiratory crisis. Greeting over 20,000 faithful in St. Peter’s Square, he expressed his gratitude for their prayers. He blessed a rosary and gifted candy to a boy, showing signs of improvement as he approached his fourth week of convalescence.

The 88-year-old pontiff has been advised by doctors to avoid crowds but is eager to demonstrate his recovery. He met with King Charles III and Queen Camilla, visited St. Peter’s Basilica to pray, and prayed before a favorite icon of the Virgin Mary at St. Mary Major Basilica. Despite limited public speaking, he thanked the faithful for their support during his physical weakness.

During the Palm Sunday mass, a top Vatican cardinal read Francis’ homily urging the faithful to carry the cross of those who suffer. The procession of cardinals carrying palm branches symbolized Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and the eventual events leading to his crucifixion and resurrection.

In his blessing, the pope prayed for peace in conflict-stricken regions such as Sudan, Lebanon, Ukraine, the Middle East, Congo, Myanmar, and South Sudan. Despite ongoing health challenges, Pope Francis continues to fulfill his spiritual duties and offer support and prayers for those in need.
