Indiana Governor Mike Braun recently introduced the “Make Indiana Healthy Again” program, which will prevent recipients of SNAP benefits from purchasing candy and soda. This move makes Indiana the first state to restrict the use of these benefits on unhealthy items. Braun emphasized that SNAP funds are often spent on sugary drinks and candy instead of fruits and vegetables, which he aims to change with this initiative. In addition to banning certain items, the program includes executive orders to modify work requirements for SNAP participants, reinforce income and asset verification rules, and address improper payments and administrative errors. The initiative also includes plans for a fitness test in schools, increased transparency on food dyes, strategies to combat diet-related chronic diseases, and improved access to local foods. The announcement was made in collaboration with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. The “Make Indiana Healthy Again” program aims to promote healthier choices and improve the well-being of Indiana residents by encouraging better nutrition and lifestyle habits.
