Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) has recently invested $14.9 million in a new high-tech production line at its facility in Lilongwe, Malawi. This upgrade, led by Coca-Cola Beverages Malawi (CCBM), will significantly increase the company’s production capacity and allow for the manufacturing of various beverages, including Coca-Cola and the popular local brand Sobo. The new line features artificial intelligence for predictive maintenance, helping to reduce downtime and operational costs. It also provides opportunities for employee training to develop a skilled workforce in Malawi. CCBA’s CEO, Sunil Gupta, emphasizes the company’s commitment to local production and sourcing as well as supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.
Neil French, general manager of Coca-Cola Beverages Malawi, highlights the shared opportunities created across the value chain by this investment. This initiative aligns with CCBA’s efforts toward operational excellence and digital transformation. The expanded production capacity is expected to support exports to neighboring Zambia, positioning Malawi as a regional hub in CCBA’s operations in southern Africa. The Coca-Cola system has a widespread manufacturing and distribution network across Africa, with operations in over a dozen countries on the continent. As one of the largest bottling partners of The Coca-Cola Company, CCBA plays a significant role in serving diverse markets with local production and distribution. Africa’s growing population, urbanization, expanding middle class, and digital retail trends make it a key growth frontier for Coca-Cola and other FMCG firms, driving demand for branded consumer goods.
