Indiana’s Bold Move to Redraw State Lines and Acquire Parts of Illinois: A Historic First Shot at the Border

Indiana’s Legislature has approved a bill to create the Indiana-Illinois Boundary Adjustment Commission, which would recommend changing the border between the two states. Residents of some Illinois counties are seeking to separate from the Chicago area, prompting this move. Republican Indiana Gov. Mike Braun plans to sign the bill into law, but a change in state boundaries would also need approval from Illinois and the U.S. Congress, making it unlikely.

Illinois officials, including Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, have expressed opposition to the idea, labeling it as a “stunt.” While minor boundary changes between states have occurred, major changes have not happened since the Civil War era.

The movement to adjust the border between Illinois and Indiana reflects political and urban-rural divisions. Democrats control the Chicago area and the Illinois state government, while Republicans represent many other parts of the state. In the last five years, voters in 33 Illinois counties have approved measures to consider separating from Chicago’s Cook County to form a new state.

A similar movement is happening in eastern Oregon, where some counties want to join Republican-led Idaho. The Idaho House passed a measure inviting Oregon to enter discussions, but no progress has been made in the Oregon Legislature.

Overall, the potential boundary adjustment between Indiana and Illinois faces challenges and is viewed as unlikely to happen.
