Indiana woman’s 53-year-old cold case killing suspect has been identified

In 1972, Phyllis Bailer was found dead in a ditch in Indiana, with her unharmed daughter nearby. She had been sexually assaulted and shot. DNA testing in later years led to a suspect being identified as Fred Allen Lienemann, a Michigan man with a criminal history. Lienemann was killed in 1985, so he was never charged in Bailer’s murder. Police partnered with a forensic genealogy company in California to identify Lienemann as the killer. Despite not having any known connections to Bailer, DNA found on her clothing matched Lienemann. If he were alive today, he would have been charged in the case. This cold case highlights the importance of advancements in DNA technology in solving crimes and bringing closure to families of victims.
