Fundraising Campaign Launched to Revitalize Indiana’s Oldest Surviving Theatre

Revival of Columbus’s Historic Crump Theatre on the Horizon

COLUMBUS — An ambitious new campaign, the Encore Project, aims to restore the long-abandoned Crump Theatre, a historic gem in Columbus. Originally opened in 1889 as an opera house, the theatre has faced potential demolition since the 1980s. The initiative seeks to transform the space into a 700-seat concert venue, enhancing the local arts scene.

The Encore Project recently launched to fundraise for a comprehensive restoration of the 135-year-old building, building upon five years of volunteer efforts that have allowed the theatre to operate in a limited capacity. “You can see the possibilities, but the real question is, ‘Does anyone else?’" said Jess Schnepp, the facilities manager leading the renovation.

Recent improvements have made the Crump structurally sound, and plans include constructing a new lobby, upgrading to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and installing an air conditioning system. The restoration will also focus on repairing the balcony, aiming to double the venue’s capacity.

Project director Steve Sanders emphasized the importance of public support: “Even people who may have said, ‘It should meet the wrecking ball’ can understand this is a place worth saving.” The theatre has received significant donations, including period-correct seats and a sound system from Market Square Arena.

Schnepp reflects on the progress made during her tenure. “When someone says, ‘You saved it,’ it takes a lot for that to sink in,” she expressed, highlighting the community’s shared vision of revitalizing the Crump.
