Indiana man accused of tampering with evidence in Alabama baseball gambling scandal

Real estate investor and youth baseball coach Bert Neff from Indiana has been charged with destroying evidence, tampering with witnesses, and providing false statements to the FBI in connection with suspicious wagering activity surrounding an Alabama-LSU baseball game in April. The incident led to the firing of Alabama coach Brad Bohannon for his involvement in betting activity. Prosecutors allege that Neff received inside information about the Alabama team’s starting pitcher being injured and unable to play, which he then shared with other bettors, resulting in significant wagers being placed on the game. Neff allegedly replaced his mobile device multiple times and advised other gamblers to delete messages or destroy their phones. He also provided false information to investigators when questioned about his actions. Neff’s son, Andrew, plays baseball for Cincinnati, where two staffers were also terminated for knowledge of Neff’s gambling activities. The case has not implicated any athletes in the scandal. Neff faces a series of charges related to his involvement in the betting scandal and attempts to obstruct the investigation. The story was originally reported by Sports Illustrated and Seamus Hughes of the New York Times. The case underscores the risk of illegal sports betting and the serious consequences that can result from involvement in such activities.
