Governor’s Power Over IU Trustees Raises Concerns

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A controversial procedural change has shifted the composition of the Indiana University (IU) Board of Trustees, sparking debate among political analysts. Last Friday, Indiana’s political commentators expressed that the method of this legislative alteration, introduced during the state budget bill’s conference committee, raises perception issues despite being common practice.

The new legislation grants Governor Mike Braun the authority to appoint all nine IU trustees, eliminating the previous system where three members were elected by the IU Alumni Association. This change allows for the immediate removal of current alumni trustees, a move not mirrored in the Purdue University Board of Trustees, where three out of ten members are still alumni-elected.

Critics, including Democratic strategist Lara Beck, argue that the lack of public hearings or floor amendments surrounding this decision undermines transparency. “When you change something so consequential without public debate, it reflects poorly on the supermajority and the governor,” she stated, emphasizing IU’s significant economic role in Indiana.

Conversely, Republican strategist Whitley Yates defended the move, calling it part of the standard legislative process. She noted past conflicts between IU administration and trustees, particularly regarding protest management, justifying the need for a more cohesive leadership structure.

Further complicating matters, state lawmakers have introduced $2.4 billion in budget cuts, disproportionately affecting higher education, leading to a 5% reduction in state funds for campus operations and repair. Both analysts agree that these cuts necessitate a critical review of university operations and affordability strategies, echoing previous measures taken by Purdue University under former President Mitch Daniels to freeze tuition.
