Caesars-Operated Casinos in Iowa and Indiana Withhold Payouts on Illinois Man’s Winning Sports Bets

Chicago Man Fights for $800,000 in Sports Betting Winnings

CHICAGO (WBBM) — A suburban Chicago man, Thomas McPeek, 24, is embroiled in a contentious battle with casinos after winning nearly $800,000 in sports bets, only to have them voided when he attempted to cash in.

McPeek, residing with his parents, transformed their basement into a shrine dedicated to their favorite teams, including the Cubs and Bears. Drawing on his extensive research from various betting books, he meticulously placed complex wagers known as parlays last year, believing he had a strategic edge.

His betting spree commenced at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana, in August, where he wagered around $30,000 and racked up $350,000 in winnings. A month later, he traveled to the Isle Casino in Bettendorf, Iowa, and placed additional bets amounting to $450,000.

Despite his successful run, McPeek faced unexpected challenges when both casinos refused to honor his winnings in October. The Horseshoe canceled his tickets based on house rules, and the Isle Casino cited anti-money laundering regulations among other policies.

McPeek, an "advantage player," purposely places smaller bets to remain unnoticed, often donning disguises to protect his identity. While he received payments from Blue Chip Casino after winning there, he feels unjustly treated by Caesars, the parent company of both casinos involved.

Gambling experts weigh in on McPeek’s plight. Some argue he attempted to circumvent casino rules, while others, like betting author Eli Feustel, believe Caesars acted unfairly by voiding bets after the outcomes became clear.

With state regulators siding with the casinos, McPeek is considering legal action, stating, “There’s no rule against staying under the radar.” As the saga unfolds, it remains to be seen whether he will get the justice he seeks.
