Weekly Roundup from the Statehouse: Key Legislative Updates
This week at the Indiana Statehouse, significant legislative actions took place concerning the state budget and health care policies.
State Budget Cuts
Under House Enrolled Act 1001 (HEA 1001), Indiana’s Republican leaders have initiated measures to address a revenue shortfall. Key budget cuts include a reduction of local public health funding to $40 million annually—down from $150 million—and a 5% cut in higher education funding. To help close the revenue gap, the state will also implement a $2 increase in the cigarette tax.
Healthcare Legislation
House Enrolled Act 1003 (HEA 1003) was approved on the session’s last day, featuring diverse policies aimed at improving the health care sector. Notably, this act clarifies existing regulations around the site of service and prohibits health provider contracts that restrict competition, fostering a more open healthcare environment.
School Board Transparency
Senate Enrolled Act 287 (SEA 287) mandates that school board candidates label their political affiliation—Republican, Democrat, independent, or nonpartisan—on ballots. Proponents argue this enhances transparency in elections, while critics fear it may politicize school board races unduly.
