More than twelve years after Aliza Sherman was fatally stabbed in downtown Cleveland, police arrested Gregory Moore, 51, her former divorce attorney, in connection with her death. On March 24, 2013, Sherman, a 53-year-old nurse and mother of four, was waiting outside Moore’s office when she was attacked. A grand jury has indicted Moore on multiple charges, including aggravated murder, conspiracy, several counts of murder, and kidnapping.
Security footage from the crime scene showed a hooded figure fleeing, initially unidentified but now believed to be Moore. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations reopened Sherman’s case in 2021 after it was highlighted on NBC’s “Dateline,” featuring interviews with her daughter. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley stated that evidence accumulated by law enforcement has indicated that Moore orchestrated and participated in the murder.
The indictment reveals that Moore texted Sherman the day of her death, instructing her to meet him at his office at 4:30 PM and asked her to notify him when she was leaving. Reports allege that Moore, or an accomplice, approached Sherman from behind and stabbed her over ten times. Prior to and after the attack, Moore allegedly sent texts and made calls to create a false alibi, suggesting he was unaware of the assault.
Moore’s motive appears to be linked to preventing a divorce trial set for the following day, amid ongoing investigations into bomb threats he reportedly made to avoid court appearances. In 2017, Moore pleaded guilty to charges related to the bomb threats and providing false information during the investigation into Sherman’s death. He will be arraigned at a later date.
