Derek Owings Signs Three-Year Extension with Indiana Hoosiers
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana Hoosiers strength coach Derek Owings is set to remain with the football program after signing a three-year contract extension that includes a “significant pay raise,” as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Owings joined the Hoosiers alongside head coach Curt Cignetti last season, contributing to a historic performance that led Indiana to its first College Football Playoff appearance. Previously, he served as the strength coach at James Madison from 2020.
Speculation had surfaced that Southern California was interested in hiring Owings, with USC reportedly making a strong push for his services. Ultimately, Owings chose to stay in Bloomington, reinforcing his commitment to the Hoosiers.
During his tenure, Owings has played a pivotal role in the development of student-athletes, with three receiving All-American honors: linebacker Aiden Fisher, defensive lineman Mikail Kamara, and defensive back D’Angelo Ponds. The Hoosiers’ strong performance culminated in an 11-1 regular season record, the best in program history, before a tough first-round loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff.
Additionally, Indiana will retain both its offensive and defensive coordinators, ensuring continuity in the coaching staff following last year’s success. With Owings’ extended contract, the Hoosiers aim to build on their achievements as they prepare for the upcoming season.
