BNSF Railway Restructures Technology Division, Lays Off Workers
FORT WORTH, Texas – BNSF Railway has announced layoffs within its technology services staff as part of a significant departmental restructuring. Reports indicate that the cuts may affect between 140 and 175 employees. This move aligns with BNSF’s effort to create a new division, “bnsf | tech,” aimed at innovating rail operations.
The Fort Worth-based carrier emphasized that the restructured technology division will rely less on contractors and third-party vendors moving forward. A company statement revealed plans for increased investment and an expanded team of software engineers, tasked with developing a safer and smarter railroad system. While certain positions within the Technology Services department are being eliminated or repurposed, BNSF remains committed to supporting affected employees through transition resources.
These changes come amid mixed financial performance reports for BNSF. Although the company noted higher earnings in the first quarter of 2025, challenges persist. At Berkshire Hathaway’s recent annual meeting, outgoing CEO Warren Buffett addressed these issues, acknowledging that while earnings are slightly up from the previous year, they remain below expectations. However, he expressed confidence that the issues are “solvable” and are being addressed.
This is not the first significant workforce reduction for BNSF, which previously laid off over 360 mechanical employees in March 2024. The restructuring of the technology division reflects the company’s broader strategy to adapt to current market conditions and invest in technological advancements for future efficiency.
