Family of U.S. Citizen Girl Recovering from Rare Brain Tumor Determined to Come Back After Deportation

An 11-year-old girl, recovering from a rare brain tumor, recently celebrated her birthday in Mexico, far from her home in Texas, after her parents were deported. The family, which includes four U.S. citizen children, was removed from the U.S. three months ago during a routine immigration checkpoint stop. The girl’s parents, lacking legal documentation, were arrested, despite having been in the midst of obtaining T visas as victims of human trafficking. Their deportation raised significant safety concerns, as they were dropped in a region notorious for kidnapping U.S. citizens.

On Friday, the family plans to meet with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to seek support for their return under humanitarian parole, emphasizing the urgent need for the girl’s continued medical care. Rochelle Garza, president of the Texas Civil Rights Project, stated that public pressure on lawmakers is vital, and several Democratic representatives are addressing the family’s plight. The family has faced difficulties accessing medical care in Mexico, where securing a checkup for the girl required extensive effort.

Historically, similar deportations have occurred, with other families describing systemic issues regarding the separation of U.S. citizen children from their undocumented parents during immigration enforcement. The Texas Civil Rights Project is advocating for the parents and children to receive humanitarian parole consdering the girl’s medical condition and ongoing treatment needs. As they prepare to apply for re-entry to the U.S., the family hopes Congress will respond positively, recognizing the humanitarian implications of their case.
