GM Introduces Innovative EV Battery Technology, Targets Market Leadership


General Motors (GM) is set to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) technology with its new lithium manganese-rich (LMR) prismatic battery cells, expected to debut in full-size electric models like the Chevrolet Silverado and Escalade IQ in 2028. This innovation focuses on using more abundant and cheaper minerals, such as manganese, instead of cobalt and nickel, thus reducing costs while enhancing profitability. Kurt Kelty, GM’s vice president of battery, propulsion, and sustainability, emphasized that LMR technology will provide premium range and performance affordably, positioning it as a game-changer for electric trucks.

While LMR batteries have been available for decades, their shorter lifespan has been a significant drawback. GM, in partnership with LG Energy Solution, aims to overcome this limitation. The joint venture, Ultium Cells, plans to commence U.S. commercial production by 2028, with preproduction targeting late 2027. These prismatic cells are more efficient than GM’s current pouch and cylindrical cell designs, promising a reduction of hundreds of pounds per vehicle and having 50% fewer parts.

Moreover, LMR batteries are projected to achieve 33% higher energy density than the best-performing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells at a comparable cost. While GM did not specify exact battery costs, analysts estimate the price could drop to around $80–$90 per kilowatt-hour, a significant improvement from current costs of at least $125 per kilowatt-hour. GM is also enhancing consumer adoption of EVs by addressing common concerns related to cost and range, aiming for over 400 miles of range for its electric trucks. Overall, these developments are part of GM’s broader electrification plan, which has seen substantial investment despite some shifts in strategy due to consumer demand.
