Man Charged in New Jersey Wildfire Claims He’s Not at Fault

Joseph Kling, a 19-year-old from New Jersey, is facing charges of aggravated arson and arson related to the significant Jones Road wildfire that erupted in late April. The fire, which ravaged 15,300 acres in southern Ocean County, reportedly began when Kling set wooden pallets ablaze during a bonfire with friends on April 21. He claims he attempted to extinguish the flames before leaving the site, stating, “I kicked dirt on it and everything,” but left early to help a friend who had suffered a dirt bike accident.

Despite his claims of trying to put out the fire, Kling argues that others present should have ensured the flames were completely extinguished, insisting that he was not solely responsible. Approximately 16 individuals were present during the bonfire, contributing to his belief that the responsibility should be shared. Following the incident, on May 1, a 17-year-old was also charged in connection with the fire, facing similar charges of aggravated arson, arson, and hindering apprehension, further complicating the case against Kling.

Kling and the other teen purportedly provided false information to law enforcement, leading to additional charges against Kling for hindering apprehension. His attorney, Joseph Compitello, has stated that there is currently no evidence linking the bonfire directly to the wildfire, and highlighted that the site had signage warning against open fires.

Authorities noted that the wildfire, which generated significant damage, was first reported on April 22. The fire was eventually declared fully contained by May 12. The case raises questions regarding accountability and the implications of outdoor fire regulations, particularly in designated fire-prohibited areas.
