Indiana Attorney General Faces Disciplinary Action Over False Claims
(INDIANA CAPITAL CHRONICLE) — Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita has come under fire following comments he made about State Senator Liz Brown, suggesting she derailed a key immigration bill due to "personal reasons." During an April radio interview, Rokita claimed Brown’s alleged relationship with an undocumented family member influenced her actions, labeling the bill as stalled due to her “personal grudge.”
In response, Senator Brown firmly disputed Rokita’s assertions, calling them "blatantly false" and an attempt to mislead constituents about her integrity and role as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Subsequently, she filed a formal grievance against Rokita with the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission, initiating an official investigation into his comments.
The contentious bill in question, House Bill 1531, aimed to mandate local law enforcement compliance with federal detainer requests for undocumented immigrants and prohibit employers from hiring unauthorized residents. Although it cleared the House with a 64-26 vote, it failed to receive a hearing in the Senate, where it was assigned to Brown’s committee.
Rokita and Brown have exchanged harsh words, with Rokita defending his remarks while accusing her of political maneuvers to silence dissent. He criticized the disciplinary process as an example of “political lawfare,” alleging that the commission is influenced by partisan interests.
Rokita has a history of confrontations with the disciplinary commission, having previously encountered scrutiny for derogatory comments about a physician involved in a high-profile abortion case. The attorney general’s ongoing confrontations and public statements continue to draw attention, raising questions about his conduct and the implications for his office.
