Team Penske Faces Adversity Ahead of Indy 500
SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — A turbulent week for Team Penske unfolded as both drivers, Josef Newgarden and Will Power, faced significant setbacks leading into the Indianapolis 500. On Sunday, their cars were disqualified from the Fast 12 during pre-qualifying inspection due to modified attenuators, a violation of IndyCar regulations. Subsequently, they were relegated to the last row of the starting grid, positions 32nd and 33rd.
The situation escalated on Wednesday with the dismissal of key team executives, including IndyCar President Tim Cindric and General Managers Ron Ruzewski and Kyle Moyer. This upheaval has left the team in a challenging position as they prepare for the prestigious race.
Despite the setbacks, Newgarden emphasized the importance of focusing on what is within their control. “It’s a big race with a lot of pressure… we just have to stay locked in on what our goals are for race day,” he stated. Power echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need to minimize stress while preparing for the race.
This year marks Newgarden’s first start from the last row, while Power has experienced it before in 2021. Historically, no driver has won the Indy 500 from this position, but both drivers remain committed to their strategies. “You have to take it as it comes,” Power said, stressing reliance on experience to navigate the race.
The 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday, May 25.
