Hamilton County Teen Driver to Stand Trial as Adult in Fatal Crash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Hamilton County judge has ruled that the 17-year-old driver involved in a crash that resulted in the death of former Hamilton Southeastern High School football star Mason Alexander will be tried as an adult. This decision, confirmed by the Hamilton County court, follows the tragic incident that occurred on March 1, which left Alexander, 18, deceased.

The crash took place around 9 p.m. when the BMW, driven by the juvenile and carrying Alexander, crossed into the northbound lane of Florida Road. In a bid to overtake another vehicle, the BMW collided with a Toyota RAV4, leading both vehicles to veer off the road. While the Toyota struck a mailbox, the BMW crashed into a tree and ignited.

The driver, who turned 18 in April, was detained on May 1. Prosecutors have moved to elevate his case to adult court, seeking charges that include reckless homicide, reckless driving, and the possession of fake government identification. Although adult charges are anticipated, they had yet to be officially filed as of Friday morning.

An initial hearing for the teenager is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Monday. News 8 continues to monitor the situation and seeks further details from the Hamilton County courts. This story is still developing.
