Seymour Lawyer Arrested on Multiple Felony Charges
SEYMOUR, Ind. (WISH) — Jason Michael Smith, a 45-year-old estate planning lawyer from Seymour, has been arrested on several low-level felony charges, according to Indiana State Police. Investigators began their inquiry into Smith in 2024 after discovering he had not filed personal or business tax returns for multiple years.
Smith, the owner of Smith Law Services and Floyd Harris Holding Co., is accused of failing to pay taxes on over $3.8 million deposited into his business accounts between 2019 and 2023. Floyd Harris Holding Co. specializes in investment and asset management services. Police reports indicate that Smith allegedly misused his business accounts for personal purchases without paying the requisite taxes.
A search warrant executed in October at Smith’s home and offices uncovered a suspected controlled substance, leading to an additional misdemeanor charge for drug possession from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office. Smith now faces various charges, including one count of corrupt business influence, five counts of tax evasion, and five counts of theft.
Officers from the Greenwood Police Department took Smith into custody. He was initially booked at the Johnson County jail in Franklin before being transferred to the Jackson County jail in Brownstown. As of Tuesday night, no initial court hearing has been scheduled in Jackson Circuit Court for Smith. Seymour, a city with a population of approximately 21,600, is located about an hour south of Indianapolis.
