Indiana Legislative Session Nears Conclusion Amid Controversial Measures
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — As the Indiana General Assembly approaches the conclusion of its legislative session on Thursday, lawmakers are hurrying to finalize key bills. Among the most contentious is a measure allowing school board candidates to declare political party affiliations, which has sparked significant backlash from educators and the Indiana School Boards Association. Passed narrowly with a 26-24 vote, all Democrats opposed the bill, with some Republicans joining them. Critics worry it could exacerbate divisions in educational settings, while supporters advocate for increased transparency regarding candidates’ political positions.
In a separate initiative for transparency, Governor Mike Braun announced plans to hire an outside firm to audit the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC). This measure, prompted by questions surrounding the agency’s financial management, entails a comprehensive review expected to take six to twelve months.
The fate of the state budget remains uncertain as lawmakers assess final bills. Recently, Republican leadership revealed a budget that includes substantial cuts to higher education and public health. Public health funding will drop from $100 million annually to just $40 million, alongside a 5% reduction in higher education operational budgets.
Additionally, the governance of Indiana University’s Board of Trustees will be restructured, with Governor Braun’s administration eliminating alumni elections for three board positions. The budget mandates a review of underperforming academic programs and includes provisions for increased tobacco taxes, free state park admission for Gold Star family members, and a new office of entrepreneurship with a $1 million allocation.
As legislators gear up for a late-night finish, more developments are anticipated in the coming hours.
