Press Release: Allegations of Misconduct Against Former IU Team Physician Uncovered
Indiana University (IU) is facing scrutiny following allegations of sexual misconduct involving Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr., the former men’s basketball team physician. Emails obtained by the Indiana Daily Student reveal that the university received notice of claims as early as June 21, 2024, suggesting that IU was aware of allegations against Bomba months before publicly announcing a formal investigation in September 2024.
The June email, sent by Jennifer Geize of Wagstaff Law Firm, identified the firm’s representation of an unnamed former athlete—referred to as "John Doe"—who alleged sexual abuse by Bomba during his tenure from the early 1990s. The correspondence proposed a confidential dialogue to discuss these sensitive allegations, which included requests for the university to remove Bomba Sr. from its Athletics Hall of Fame.
Despite the timing of the notification, IU’s subsequent investigative report by Jones Day indicated that the university recognized the issues in August 2024, omitting mention of the June warning. The independent investigation has since reported no conclusive evidence that Bomba’s actions during medical examinations were sexually motivated, although the plaintiffs’ attorneys strongly contest this characterization.
Several former players, including Haris Mujezinovic, have come forward, claiming systemic abuse that they allege IU officials ignored. Their legal representatives argue that the university facilitated a culture of silence around the misconduct. Mujezinovic’s claims are now part of a lawsuit against IU’s trustees, with demands for significant reparations.
In the wake of this controversy, IU is under pressure to respond to the allegations adequately, and the implications of these claims on the university’s reputation remain profound. As calls for accountability grow, advocates emphasize the urgency of providing survivors a platform to share their experiences and seek justice.
