Jim Irsay to Be Inducted into Colts Ring of Honor
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The late Jim Irsay, former owner of the Indianapolis Colts, will be posthumously inducted into the Colts Ring of Honor during the team’s September 7 home opener against the Miami Dolphins at Lucas Oil Stadium. This announcement coincides with what would have been Irsay’s 66th birthday.
Irsay, who passed away on May 21, will become the 20th honoree in the Ring of Honor, joining a prestigious list that includes football legends like Peyton Manning, Reggie Wayne, and Tony Dungy. Carlie Irsay-Gordon, the team’s current owner and CEO, highlighted her father’s passionate advocacy for the Colts and expressed that it’s fitting for him to join the ranks of those who have significantly impacted the franchise.
Jim Irsay’s connection to the Colts began in his youth, starting work at training camps in Baltimore after his father purchased the team in 1972. He made history as the youngest NFL general manager when the Colts relocated to Indianapolis in 1984, leading the team to a Super Bowl victory in 2007.
Beyond football, Irsay was known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly his “Kicking The Stigma” initiative, which has raised over $31 million for mental health causes. His contributions to community initiatives include support for the Irsay Family YMCA and Riley Hospital for Children.
The Colts plan several tributes to honor Irsay’s legacy leading up to the game.
