Viswashkumar, who had been in India for eight or nine months with his brother, was returning to London when the plane he was on tragically crashed shortly after takeoff. In an interview with Reuters, he described a disorienting experience where the aircraft suddenly appeared to stall mid-air, followed by dramatic increases in engine thrust before it crashed into a building. He was seated on the side of the plane that made contact with the ground floor of a hostel.
Once the plane came to a halt, Viswashkumar noticed a narrow escape route opened when his door broke. He managed to squeeze through, while the opposite side was blocked by the building’s wall, leaving others unable to escape. Tragically, he witnessed the air hostess and other passengers perish during the incident. Although he suffered a burn on his left hand, he was transported to a hospital where he is recovering. The medical director reported that while his physical condition is stable, the psychological impact of the event has left him disturbed.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him in the hospital, where Viswashkumar expressed his survival as a “miracle.” Meanwhile, his brother in the UK echoed these sentiments, lamenting the loss of another brother who was aboard the doomed flight. Air India reported 230 passengers and 12 crew members were on board, and sadly, 241 individuals lost their lives in the crash, including citizens from several nations. Viswashkumar’s extraordinary escape highlights both the heroism and tragedy experienced during the disaster.
