Cuts at Indiana School for the Deaf Raise Concerns for Students and Community

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) is facing significant cuts that could negatively impact its students, according to alumni and advocacy groups. Starting July 1, the school will see nearly $1 million less in funding over the next two years due to state budget reductions aimed at addressing a $2.4 billion revenue shortfall.

In a memo to parents, school officials announced the layoff of 26 positions, including nine teachers, four substitute teachers, four mentors, and two nurses. Jeffrey Spinale, a 2014 graduate and president of the Indiana Association of the Deaf, emphasized that many of the laid-off educators are deaf themselves, offering crucial role models and linguistic support for the approximately 350 students enrolled at ISD.

"Here, we can provide Deaf students their language," Spinale stated, lamenting the loss of Deaf professionals who facilitate learning in American Sign Language (ASL). The funding cuts also mean reduced hours at the school’s health center, the discontinuation of overnight health services, and the need for staff to manage cleaning responsibilities, affecting the overall environment for students who live on campus.

Parents have expressed disappointment, with many feeling overlooked by state lawmakers during the budget process. Spinale noted, “It’s already almost impossible for Deaf children to find the quality education that they deserve.” He urged lawmakers and Governor Mike Braun to visit the campus to gain insight into the essential services provided at ISD.

The offices of Governor Braun and key legislative leaders did not respond to requests for comment from News 8 regarding these cuts and their potential impact on the Deaf community.
