Evansville Mother Arrested for Neglect After Leaving Young Daughter in Extreme Heat

Evansville, Indiana – A 30-year-old mother, Lissandra Denis, has been charged with neglect after allegedly leaving her daughter outside in scorching temperatures without food or water for several hours. The incident, which unfolded at an apartment complex on the city’s southeast side, prompted a call to the Evansville Police Department around 7:19 p.m. on Sunday. A passerby reported hearing a young child screaming for her mother.

Upon their arrival, officers learned from witnesses that the child had been left outside since at least 7 a.m., enduring a heat index that soared to 101 degrees. When the girl attempted to re-enter the apartment, she reportedly found the door locked, prompting her to scream for help.

Denis was seen earlier in the complex but did not return to check on her daughter during the heat. When the police spoke with her, she claimed to have been doing laundry while allowing her daughter to play outside. However, her explanations became evasive when officers questioned her about the timing of her laundry.

The Department of Child Services was contacted, and the child was later reunited with her father. Denis was arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County jail on neglect charges, though she was not listed as an inmate as of Tuesday. Authorities remind the public that resources are available for victims of domestic violence.
