INDIANAPOLIS — A significant shift in Indiana’s education governance is on the horizon as Governor Mike Braun has signed Senate Bill 287 into law, enabling school board candidates to register with a political party effective July 1. This new legislation presents candidates with the option to publicly declare their political affiliation or run as independents, while also allowing them to withhold such information entirely.
The bill mandates that candidates identify their political party or explicitly state their independent status. If candidates opt not to disclose their affiliation, a blank space will appear next to their name on ballots. Notably, the law specifies that straight party votes will not apply to school board candidates, a point aimed at maintaining clarity in the electoral process.
Authored by State Senators Gary Byrne, Chris Garten, and Blake Doriot, the legislation faced considerable debate within the legislature, reflecting the polarized views on politicizing school board roles which historically have operated as nonpartisan positions. Advocates argued that transparency around candidates’ political affiliations could be crucial for informing parents and communities about their stances on impactful issues such as tax increases and educational policies.
Conversely, critics maintained that such a declaration could inject divisive politics into an arena that should remain focused on educational outcomes. State Senator Shelli Yoder expressed concerns that the introduction of political affiliations would harm the integrity of school boards.
