Indianapolis Local Education Alliance Holds Inaugural Meeting to Foster Collaboration
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The newly established Indianapolis Local Education Alliance conducted its first public meeting Wednesday at the City-County Building, focusing on fostering collaboration between Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) and local charter schools. Chaired by Democratic Mayor Joe Hogsett, the alliance responded to a failed legislative proposal aimed at dissolving IPS in favor of charter schools, while also addressing a forthcoming shift in property tax revenue directed towards charters starting in 2028.
IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson expressed a commitment to ensuring the alliance prioritizes all students in Indianapolis. "Before we jump into this conversation of efficiency, we first must consider what students truly deserve," she emphasized, advocating for a student-centered approach that seeks impactful and lasting decisions.
The alliance includes a diverse group of local leaders, including teachers, community organization heads, and educational administrators. The next public meetings are scheduled for July 23, August 20, September 24, October 22, November 19, and December 17, all at 6 p.m. at the City-County Building. Residents wishing to provide comments must sign up two business days before the meetings and can also submit feedback online.
This initiative represents a vital step in aligning education resources in Indianapolis, seeking to create a collaborative framework that benefits all students in the community. For general feedback, the public can reach out via email at ilea@indy.gov.
