Thomas E. Wheeler II Sworn in as Interim U.S. Attorney for Southern District of Indiana

Indianapolis, IN – Thomas E. Wheeler II was officially sworn in as the interim U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana this week, following his appointment by Attorney General Pam Bondi. His tenure commenced on Monday, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Wheeler’s nomination by President Donald Trump occurred on June 30, and his extensive legal background positions him well for this pivotal role. He has garnered a wealth of experience as the acting general counsel for the U.S. Department of Education and served as the acting assistant attorney general for civil rights. With a notable 36-year career practicing law at prestigious Indianapolis firms like Bose McKinney & Evans and Frost Brown Todd, he brings significant expertise to the table.

Throughout his career, Wheeler has been actively involved in various impactful projects, including serving as a senior adviser to the White House’s Federal Commission on School Safety. He also played a significant role as senior counsel to the U.S. Secretary of Education during the COVID-19 pandemic. One of his notable contributions includes helping to establish Indiana’s voter ID law, which ultimately received approval from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Wheeler’s appointment comes as he succeeds Zachary A. Myers, who held the position from November 2021 until January this year before joining the law firm McCarter & English. Wheeler’s term is expected to last four years. Additionally, Adam Mildred has been nominated as U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Indiana, also on June 30.

This transition heralds a new chapter for the Southern District of Indiana’s legal landscape under Wheeler’s leadership.
