Indianapolis Considers Stricter Youth Curfew After Tragic Shooting
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In the aftermath of a mass shooting in downtown Indianapolis that left two teenagers dead and five others hospitalized, city councilors are contemplating a stricter youth curfew. The proposed change would mandate that youths return home two hours earlier than the current state law allows, in response to concerns about unsupervised children contributing to violence.
Former Indiana Democratic Party Chair Kip Tew believes the curfew is a step worth pursuing but emphasizes the need for greater legislative collaboration. He criticized Republican state lawmakers for loosening gun laws, arguing that greater access to firearms has exacerbated violence among youth. “When I was growing up, fights were done with fists, not guns,” Tew remarked, underscoring the drastic shift in societal conditions.
Meanwhile, former Marion County Republican Party Chair Tom John highlighted the limitations of city regulations compared to state laws, which can only be enacted by the Indiana legislature. He expressed the necessity of bolstering support for law enforcement and criticized Mayor Joe Hogsett for a perceived lack of leadership. “The mayor needs to give the police the support to actually go out and do the things they need to protect this community,” John asserted.
Tew and John both advocate for enhanced support of the nonprofit sector, suggesting that these organizations can play a crucial role in addressing the underlying issues of youth violence. Specifically, Tew stressed the importance of programs that teach conflict de-escalation skills to children.
