Back-to-School Event in Indianapolis Aims to Empower Youth and Reduce Violence
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A back-to-school event organized by 15-year-old JP McMillian successfully brought together teenagers in Indianapolis to support children in need. Hosted by McMillian’s initiative, Young Minds Indianapolis, the gathering focused on engaging youth in positive activities to combat youth violence. Participants received essential items such as hygiene kits, over 200 pairs of shoes, and complimentary haircuts.
“I’ve only gotten so far. This event is hardly the start or the finish," McMillian stated, expressing his joy at the turnout. “If kids were to drop out today, they wouldn’t have anything to do.” His organization aims to create opportunities for young people in the community and to foster a supportive, violence-free environment.
Young Minds Indianapolis seeks to instill a sense of belonging among youth, steering them toward constructive activities. The positive response from attendees illustrates the significance of such events in providing safe spaces for young individuals.
Looking ahead, JP McMillian plans to host another event for teenagers in October, furthering his mission to offer enriching outlets for Indianapolis youth. As part of a broader effort to promote community engagement, Young Minds Indianapolis continues to focus on empowering young people throughout the city.
