Whitestown Considers Sale of Water Utilities to Citizens Energy Group
WHITESTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — Residents of Whitestown have the opportunity to learn about a major proposal regarding the sale of the town’s water utilities system, as Citizens Energy Group has put forth an offer of $37 million. This proposed sale aims to lower monthly water rates for residents while also averting a significant projected expense of $20 million to enhance the town’s water capacity, which is crucial given Whitestown’s rapid growth.
A public engagement session will be held at the Whitestown Municipal Complex on Tuesday at 6 p.m., where town officials will present details of the proposed sale. Residents and business owners will also have the chance to pose questions. Since 2008, Citizens has provided all of Whitestown’s water after the town’s original water treatment plant was abandoned.
Between 2020 and 2024, Whitestown experienced substantial population growth, rising from 10,350 to 14,564 residents, indicating a need for increased water capacity. Should the town council accept Citizens’ proposal, the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission’s approval will be required. A second reading of the sale ordinance is scheduled for the council meeting on August 13.
