Mayor Hogsett Addresses Controversial Text Messages Amid Harassment Allegations

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Mayor Joe Hogsett confirmed on Tuesday that he has sent late-night texts discussing poetry and work to a female staffer, following revelations that these messages were excluded from a recent investigative report. The report, commissioned by the City-County Council Investigative Committee and conducted by Chicago-based law firm Fisher Phillips, has faced scrutiny from two women, Lauren Roberts and Caroline Ellert, who have accused Hogsett’s administration of harassment.

In response to media inquiries, Hogsett admitted to texting Ellert, noting their close working relationship during his campaign efforts. He emphasized that while he never intended to make anyone uncomfortable, he acknowledged that such conversations can sometimes be misinterpreted out of context.

During the City-County Council meeting, Democratic Councilor Crista Carlino expressed openness to revisiting the investigation to understand why the texts were omitted. She indicated that this omission needs clarification, stressing the importance of respecting the survivors’ wishes regarding disclosure.

Responses from council members were mixed. Democratic Council President Vop Osili described the situation as "odd," while Republican councilors, including Minority Leader Michael-Paul Hart, advocated for a deeper investigation to address potential omissions. Hart emphasized the council’s responsibility to seek clarity, while Councilor Brian Mowery raised concerns about the financial implications of further investigation.

The ongoing scrutiny underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding workplace interactions within political environments.
