Ananda Lewis, Trailblazing MTV VJ, Dies at 52

Los Angeles, CA – June 11, 2023 – Ananda Lewis, the iconic MTV VJ renowned for infusing soul and authenticity into late-’90s television, has passed away at the age of 52 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Her sister, Lakshmi, confirmed the heartbreaking news via Facebook, stating, "She’s free, and in His heavenly arms."

Lewis first captivated audiences in 1997 as one of MTV’s dynamic new VJs, hosting shows like "Total Request Live" and "Hot Zone." Renowned for her engaging interviews with pop legends including Destiny’s Child and NSYNC, she also tackled grave issues such as school violence and the death of her friend, Aaliyah. In 2001, she expanded her reach by launching "The Ananda Lewis Show," which showcased her journalistic prowess.

In 2020, Lewis revealed a personal battle with stage III breast cancer, candidly sharing her journey on Instagram. She expressed regret for neglecting mammograms and spoke frankly about her decision to forgo a double mastectomy in favor of alternative treatments. By then, the cancer had progressed to stage IV.

In a poignant essay for Essence earlier this year, Lewis reflected on her life, emphasizing the importance of preventive healthcare and the desire to look back without regrets. "We’re not meant to stay here forever," she wrote, capturing her philosophy of living authentically.

Born in 1973 in Los Angeles, Lewis navigated a challenging upbringing that shaped her into a voice for a generation, particularly for young Black women. She made a significant impact on pop culture, embodying intellect and honesty, and inspiring countless viewers to embrace their true selves.

Ananda Lewis leaves behind a legacy that transcends her years on television, reminding us to live fully and unapologetically. Rest in peace, Ananda.
