Budget Cuts Create ‘Crisis’ at Indiana School for the Deaf

Indiana School for the Deaf Faces Crisis Amid State Budget Cuts

INDIANAPOLIS — Recent budget cuts have left parents and advocates of the Indiana School for the Deaf alarmed, deeming the situation a "crisis." The state slashed funding by 5%, a move that amounts to approximately $3 million and has led to significant repercussions for the school community.

Parents like Aaron Williams, whose five-year-old son Clayton is about to start kindergarten, express deep concern over the potential impact on the education and safety of the 350 deaf and hard-of-hearing children enrolled. "It’s devastating… It feels like the children at this school are being punished," Williams stated.

The funding reductions have resulted in 26 staff layoffs, including essential roles such as teachers and nurses, and the cancellation of important programs like Camp Willard, a summer camp for young deaf students. Advocates from the Indiana Association of the Deaf criticize the disproportionate cuts, noting that while traditional schools received funding increases, the Indiana School for the Deaf was labeled a "state agency" and fell victim to these cuts.

Catherine Vest, vice president of the Indiana Association of the Deaf, emphasized that this treatment is unjust and called for action from state lawmakers and Governor Mike Braun. In response to inquiries about the funding cuts, Braun minimized their impact, stating, "I don’t think a 5% cut is devastating." Advocates urge the governor to witness the school’s vital role in the community first-hand and reconsider the funding adjustments.
